July Club Racing School

Post by jwhite »

Consider this as a news leak from a well-informed source.....We will be holding a Club Racing School at our July Summit Point event. That means we will have 3 parallel events that weekend: the Club Race, the Driver School and the Club Racing School. We are getting a bit more track time so that no one will lose run group times.

Registration will be managed by Club Racing and will be on their site once the school is formally announced. I will post a new message when that occurs but, for any of you thinking about racing or just wanting to try something new, plan ahead. Remember that the August event at Lightning is a combined Driver School and Club Race.

I can't answer any questions about content of the CR School, but participants will have 4 on-track sessions per day and extensive classroom instruction.

See you there,
Jeff

Hmmm.... Perhaps the Red wReck needs to play rolling chicane at a club race school. Are hood mounted MG 08/15 machine guns allowed?

as someone who has been through cr school i highly recommend it. not only is it some serious fun but you will learn from it immeasurably. consider doing it whether your going to club race or not.

Awesome event...I highly recommend this even to those DE drivers with no intentions of racing. The on track exercises and off track coaching from experienced racers is so helpful. You won't get this kind of experience in a regular DE environment. Everyone sign up if you can!

Does the club racing school require that students participate in race-prepped cars? NASA's school did, and I can't imagine running even a "practice" race without full cage, etc.

Which leads to the next question ... if race cars are required, may they be non-BMW race cars (i.e., may my Spec Miata come play too)?

Thanks.

your car need not be street prepped. cars suitable for DE may participate in the school. however it is at the discretion of the instructors as to which cars will participate in the practice race at the end. keep in mind your not driving at 10/10ths in the school. and yes, other marques are welcome just as at a BMW CCA DE. You just won't be able to race your SM in BMW CR :)

Keep in mind that our requirements for a Spec Miata to participate in our schools is that it have a current SCCA logbook, that it has a bolted/welded in place hardtop in addition to the cage and that it meets all other requirements for passing Driver School Tech.

Understood. Does a NASA log book count?

I would rather drive my E36 in the school, but was not sure a non-race prepped car would be eligible. If a DE-equipped car can participate, then no SM need apply.

Here are some videos from the Mid Ohio club race school.

Practice Race

Practice Race Starts

FYI, I was able to use my Porsche, and there were several street prepared cars there w/o roll cages. It was a ton of fun, and really helped step up my game. I don't have any intentions to start seriously racing (LeMons doesn't count), but I wanted to take the school as a way to advance my skills. I felt that I learned more in those 2 days, than I have in the last 2 years (I felt like I was kinda plateauing as of late).

More guns?

To avoid being a rolling speed bump, I would probably seek out some R compounds to replace the street tires.

I'll buy the wheels if you buy the tires.

I am very interested. My only concern is the entry requirements for personal gear and my automobile. What are the entry requirements? Do we need a HANS Device? Do we need a rollcage? Do we need a firesuit? Do we need fire suppression for our automobile?

Sincerely,
Greg

None of the above are required. However, I would recommend an HNR device (HANS or otherwise) regardless of whether you are doing the race school/racing. Esp, if you are wearing harnesses. While your not wheel to wheel racing, most advanced students/instructors are carrying some decent speeds during a regular DE.
