Replace CDV (lock valve) on my Z4 3.0si?

Post by nj325ci »

I realize I may be a little late to the party on this topic as its been an issue for a few years now. I was thinking about replacing the Clutch Delay Valve with the Zeckhausen Racing modified unit on my 2006 Z4 coupe in the spring when I replace various fluids in hopes of attending a couple 2011 drivers' school events. For those who have done this do you feel a noticable difference and is there any down side?

Any input would be much appreicated. Thanks, Bill

I did this mod on my 2007 Z4M coupe. I had a hard time noticing any difference, if I am being honest.

You'd probably notice it most if you like to dump your clutch (and break things). Otherwise it's a very subtle difference.

I did this back in '05 on my 330i ZHP; it was night and day. I hated driving the car with the original CDV. The mod makes driving the car as if it had a normal clutch. It was much more pronounced on a E39 540i that I drove as well. Terrific mod. Definitely do it.

Bill, I've heard you may not even need a fake/blank/drilled one, often times there is enough room in the clutch line to eliminate the CDV and just connect the hose directly to the hard line

Brent is dead on the money, no need to spend any money.Just remove the vlave and reconnect the line..people use the modified ones to avoid warranty issues (it appears to be in place and functional)..2006 is out of regular warranty unless it's a CPO vehicle.
And yes,I love the mod...very noticable!!

I agree with Ray: No need to replace the valve with a gutted look alike unless there is a warranty consideration.

Keep in mind that some shops may not warranty driveline work if the valve has been removed or if they find a non-functional replacement.

I find it interesting that the opinions regarding the change in pedal feel vary so much. I think the perceived change might be related to one's particular driving style.

i think it depends on the engine too vic. Something that's got a lot of low end torgue off the line will feel different to one with less when dis-engaging the clutch regardless of the cdv removal.

Interesting point, Kish. BTW, did you mean "engaging" the clutch [letting the pedal up] or "dis-engaging", as you wrote? Semantics, I know, but I am a bit confused, as usual.

you are right vic. the correct terminology would be to engage the clutch :)

For what it's worth, I just noticed there's an article about this modification in the February 2011 Roundel.
