Different brand tires front and rear

Post by Moose77 »

I have an e36 m3. I am currently running conti sports all around. My tires are staggered so of course I burn thru rears way quicker than fronts. I was thinking of replacing the rears with Hankook v12. Will my car pass tech inspection with different brand tires? Has anyone had issues trying to do this?

At NJ Chapter driver-school Tech, the requirement is that each axle have the same size tires. That is, both fronts same size and both rears same size. Front and rear sizes need not be the same.

You can mix tire brands front to rear, but should match tire type and performance level. Tell the salesman at Tirerack (or wherever) what you are trying to match to, and they should be able to help you select an equivalent in a different brand.

As Vic says, L&R must match. HTH, Bob

I passed tech multiple times with mismatch brands on the rear axle, but same sizes. One is a V12, the other is a PS2. Same size & performance spec, so no problem through tech (though I don't advise this kind of combo)
