Hi, I'm driving a 2005 Lotus Elise with Toyo Proxes R888R tires. As the car is very light (< 2,000 lbs.), tires last quite a while. Mine have 24 track days on them, and could probably last another eight or ten. But at the Thunderbolt event a week ago they picked up so much clag and gravel that I couldn't really see any of my own tread. And when some of the clag came off on the straight, it ripped up the bottom edge of the body behind the left rear tire.
I've never seen this much clag. If you were me, would you replace the tires, or am I just going to pick up the same amount of clag at the next event?

Mega-clag, replace tires?
Re: Mega-clag, replace tires?
Matthew,
Most likely you picked up the excess clag that was left behind by the racers that use softer tires, something that doesn't happen as much with the normal Driver School cars. When I get that build up on my tires I use a heat gun and a scraper to clean them after removing them from the car.

Thank Matt,
I never knew what those black rubber pieces that tend to hit my front end, windshield, body panels and stuck on my tires and wheels are called.

More colloquially, also called "tire boogers".
