BMW Gathering?
BMW Gathering?
I would like know if anyone would be interested in a laid back social event? BMW's in the park picnic. No competition, no rally, just a gathering of enthusiasts have some food on a grill shooting the breeze about BMW's.
I've held an e21 Gathering 5 years in a row at Holmdel Park, within a mile or so of the PNC Autocross location. It has been a fair success as I had people come from as far away as MA and VT. I would like to see if any of the club members would be interested in attending this type of gathering?
The park has a large upper parking lot with a large picnic area plus walking trails, tennis courts, and enough grass for everyone to lay a blanket out and relax. The park also has picnic tables with grills under the trees to use as well. I had a BYOF (Bring Your Own Food) rule which cuts down on the out of pocket club expense as well as a nice variety of dishes people can bring out. Plus there is something for everyone to eat this way.
Is this something that would interest the club and its members?

Laid back and social do not mix at these events. Tim M. will start bouncing his car off the rev limiter and Dave N. will be setting up pylons around the bike path before the first coat of Zymol even gets applied. At the same time someone will be doing tech inspections at the bbq pit and Larry will start yelling. You see where this is heading? I'm all for it, of course, but don't say we didn't warn you

I agree, this is something I have talked about, never seemed to go anywhere. I attended Bimmerfest East two years ago, I am telling you the guy who got it toghether had his ducks in a row. Maybe two hundred cars, they where all in rows by code, no fee!!!!!!! He had a DJ, free food, drinks, "sponsors". I did run into a few members, he did not let me set up for membership because we gave him a cold shoulder, and I would say that more then half where not BMWCCA members. This was a great event, maybe something we should look into for the fall. R

I am glad there is some interest. I would need some advanced notice to set everything up. I know with the park if there is over 50 people, we need to apply for a permit, which is about $10.
I agree about the heat, this would be best around September when its not 90+ degrees.
I will talk with Larry and see if the power that be would agree with a social gathering so we can print it in the newsletter so we can get a head count.

I like these things, too. The problem is - if we make it a club event we're probably talking insurance, waivers, etc. Cost and complexity ensue.
The board is happy to consider events proposed to us at board meetings, which are open to all. They're usually the first Wednesday of the month. This month is different. It will be at Thunderbolt on Monday the 7th, and won't be a long one.

I am going away at the end of August for two weeks and if you don't mind the heat, we can do this in the beginning of August. I also have to check with the park to make sure we have a lot of room for everyone and they don't have other groups already scheduled.
In the past this wasn't a club event but it would be nice to make it official so it can be put on our schedule as well as promote it in the newsletter and website. This might be a good way to get people who normally don't come to events to see who we are and see what the clubs about without any racing.
