How much to switch tires

Post by taxwoman »

What is the normal price for a BMW dealer to switch out summer tires to winter tires. I'm talking about tires with their own wheels. I had no choice today, because I hit a pothole with the ZHP, and I was on my way to the dealer for a recall item. I had the winter wheels in the back of the car, because I had planned to take them to the American Tire store, who usually does the switch for free for me

I don't know if they have a set rate, but the average time charged to remove and install a wheel is .2 hours, times 4 your looking at .8 hours. They may have a 1 hour minumum. Not sure of the labor rate, most of our local BMW dealer charge $120/hr - $150/hr, so doing the math, could be about $96.00 - $150.00, plus tax.

I can unload, change, and reload a set of wheels in 20 minutes. With a lift 15 minutes MAX.

They wanted $100, got it down to $70, which is still robbery.

I am curious: if you consider $70 to be "robbery", what do you think the job is worth?

I am also curious as to whether your $70 bought you lug bolts tightened with a torque wrench or with an impact gun.

I gave up trying to get a shop to switch my tires. ETD would have charged $40 - $50 each time. (that's $80 - $100 per year).

Got tired of paying several years ago and brought a hydraulic jack, breaker bar and torque wrench. In addition to the tools - putting my 13 year old son (next generation auto-x driver / BMW owner) to work.

Dave,

Good for you [and your son]. First auto repair job I ever did was helping Dad rotate the tires on our '51 Chevy. I still have his cross wrench.

And, you KNOW your lug bolts are getting tightened with a torque wrench.

Vic, any regular tire shop charges about $30 for the same job. American tires in Mercerville, does it for me twice a year for nothing, and yes they use all the right tools, and check the tires. I now started buying my tires from them.

Remember it was there for the recall. Yes, they ran it through the wash, that left such mess on my windows, that I had to get the whole thing rewashed again.....they owe me for that too, lol.

We Charge

Post by TimCircleBMW »

We charge between $30-$50 depending on if I have to lift one myself :) - Torqued by hand (some guys use a calibrated gun with torque stick, but most use a Snap On torque wrench). We bag them back up and then clean the car. We also top off all fluids, etc. Jeff is right about the labor times. The tech still gets paid .7 actually, but I reduce the amount charged to the customer. -- Tim
