Changing Trans and Diff fluid

Post by grijo »

Planning to change the manual transmission and differencial oils on my 88 M5. Trying to find out if the filler and drain plugs use washers. Want to make sure I have all the parts before I begin the process.

Thanks,
Guido

Guido,

The trans plugs are tapered. like NPT, and do not use washers. The diff plugs do and these are availble at the dealer for pennies.

I'm sure I don't need to remind you to always remove the fill plug first, just in case you can't.

Trans and Diff fluid change, more questions

Post by grijo »

Bob,

Thanks for the reply. I'll stop by the dealer tomorrow to get the washers.

I am planning to use Redline fluids on the transmission and differential. Called Redline to inquire about the correct oil to use. Here is their recommendation:
1) For the differential: 75W90
2) For the transmission: Green label use MT-90. Red label use D4-ATF. No label use MTL.

Looked under my 88 M5 on the driver and passenger side and could not find a label. On the passenger side I can see the GETRAG name, but no label. On the driver side I can see VIN number on a black label.

Could it be that the label felt off?

Thanks,
Guido
