NJ Diesel Inspection

Post by s38junkie »

My MB Diesel is 24 years old and according to NJ MVC rules qualifies for being emissions exempt. Their website only says "All diesel powered vehicles model year 1996 and older that are plated passenger, not for profit, governmental, commuter van , farmer or farm truck except buses (are exempt)". This left me wondering how police would distinguish between my expired inspection being valid or not knowing the difference and pulling me over.

So I went to the DMV and (after much hassling) was told to scrape off my expired inspection sticker and carry around a print out in my glovebox of their exemption rules. I asked if there was some other decal that could be applied to my license plates to inform police of my exemption status (similar to collector cars) and they said "NO".

So my question is this: do I keep the expired inspection sticker on my windshield or scrape it off? Which will draw less attention from police??

And if anyone has any other information to share about their pre 1996 diesel exemption status or was told differently by their DMV, please let me know!

Thanks in advance.

Scrape it off and carry the printout. my 2000 f-350 7.3 is also exempt due it being 10k GVWR. I have no inspection sticker.

I agree with Kish.

Now here is another diesel-emissions question:

I have a 2004 Ram 2500 with 9000 GVWR. Up until now it has received only the safety inspection as NJ was not checking diesel emissions, except perhaps for visible smoke.

With the new NJ inspection having deleted the safety inspection as of 1 August, what will be inspected on my truck? Am I exempt from further inspection?

Just went thru this w/MVC (Flem office-very nice too) on my 1984 F250 Diesel. If I had titled it at 10,000 lbs a self-inspection would have sufficed, however I chose to title it at 6000 lbs and was also told by Trenton MVC to scrape off the sticker and carry a print-out of the regulation in my truck and that no inspection for emissions was required. So I followed their advice, and havent been pulled over yet...since Sept 1st.

Go to the MVC website for confirmation for your specific diesel-powered car or truck to see the new rules effective 8/1/10.

Here's a nice Q&A on this:

http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/pdf/Inspecti ... ection.pdf

I was beginning to wonder why my 2008 F250 SD with a 6.4 diesel got a 1yr extension sticker..my truck is rated under 10k .. the above PDF link clearly shows that we're off the hook :) Obviously this sticker doesn't need to be used on my truck.

Thanks, Bruce and Ray. You can be sure I will be carrying a copy of the NJMVC FAQ document, with the inspection-exemption for my truck hilighted, in my glovebox!

I too had a discussion with the nice NJMVC folks at the Flemington office. This was last fall, before the new inspection was instituted on 1 Aug, and I was inquiring about registering my truck for 10,000 lb. in order to go the self-inspection route.

They explained to me that the weight you register the truck for has nothing to do with inspection requirements. It is the truck's GVWR [Gross Vehicle Weight Rating] that determines if the vehicle is eligible for self-inspection. My truck, at 9000 lb. GVWR, was not eligible for self-inspection, as the criterion was 10,000 lb. or more. The GVWR is indicated on the VIN lable, usually on the driver-door pillar. Note that this is consistent with the FAQ cited by Ray, which refers to GVWR, not registered weight.
